The internship was the first time I was exposed to personal financial planning. After the training I received, it was clear this was the career for me.
Through the internship, I learned all about the career. Once I was hired full time, I was able to begin building my practice right away.
The spring internship was a classroom setting. I learned about products, how to prospect and how to include fraternalism in my business. I even got licensed. I followed that up with a summer internship where I experienced what the job actually entails by running meetings with real clients.
I’ve been a Modern Woodmen internship coordinator for the state of Indiana since February 2015 (about six months into being a full-time representative).
One of the first interns I taught attended Indiana State University. He asked if I would teach the students in his business club about what it means to be a financial advisor and what the financial planning process looks like. A number of those students have reached out to me showing interest in career opportunities with Modern Woodmen.
It’s great to know Modern Woodmen was able to support this local organization through its Matching Fund Program.
The owners run the facility at a monetary loss each year. They do it simply because of the amazing results they’ve seen from helping local kids. After raising nearly $9,000, I delivered a check to the facility on a day they were holding sessions. Seeing these 7- and 8-year-olds riding horses and having so much fun was incredible.
At Modern Woodmen, I get to make an impact in the lives of members of my community each and every day.
This woman didn’t know how to access money she had accumulated from her nursing career. We were able to take an inventory of her assets and assess her risk tolerance. Then we devised a plan for her to retire while drawing a comfortable income for the rest of her life. When the time came, she retired much more comfortably than she had envisioned.
I earned my way to the National Sales Conference in my first full year as a financial representative. It was a big accomplishment to attend the San Diego trip with my peers who I looked up to and had been at Modern Woodmen for a long time.
Having experienced the internship firsthand and seeing what an instrumental difference it made in my development, I’m grateful to be able to take others down a similar path.
I was promoted to management at age 23. I attribute this to the great leadership around me and my internship experience. It allowed me to hit the ground running after graduation.
Throughout my career with Modern Woodmen, I’ve had the opportunity to look around my community for places where I can make a difference both individually and corporately.

I was set on my dreams to be a professional athlete, but didn’t want to be stuck and not move forward in life. Modern Woodmen gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse.
