Saving for a comfortable retirement requires careful planning and time. Many people, however, delay saving and make excuses. If these excuses sound familiar, keep our helpful tips in mind. Make the most of your retirement financial security.
1. “I’m too young. Why do I need to think about retirement now?”
Retirement savings take time to build. If you are 25 years old today and save $100 a month for 40 years at 5 percent annual interest, you will have more than $150,000 waiting for you at age 65. But what if you wait until you are 35 years old to save? No big deal, right? Think again. By waiting 10 years longer to start, you'll have less than $84,000. That’s a lot of money! Take time now to save a little each month.
2. “I don’t make enough money.”
You’re not alone. Many people feel this way. Many people who retire comfortably use a household budget. Follow a rule to pay yourself first. Each month, set aside something, even a small amount, for your paycheck in retirement.
3. “I’ll have Social Security.”
It’s difficult to predict what Social Security will look like in the future or how much you will receive when you retire. According to the Social Security Administration, the average monthly retirement benefit as of March 2019* was less than $1,500. Could you live on that amount in retirement?
If you want to be able to travel, spoil your children or grandchildren, and enjoy your retirement as much as possible, start saving today. Many obstacles, in addition to Social Security, may stand in your way for a comfortable retirement: health care costs, inflation, fewer pensions and the risk of outliving your money. Modern Woodmen can help you create a retirement plan, taking these obstacles into account.

4. “I don’t plan to retire.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, average life expectancy in the U.S. as of 2013 was nearly 79 years. Imagine being older and unable to work ... but still needing to. Better have a backup plan. Although you may think not retiring is a great plan when you are in your 60s or younger, life changes. You need to be prepared.
5. “I’m too old.”
It’s never too early or late to save, especially if you are still working. If not for yourself, for your family. A Modern Woodmen representative can help you review your situation and create a solid retirement plan.
